Racing is in the blood for Katriel Jones (8) who recently brought home third place in the 7-8 years group from the King of the North Motorcross competition.
Katriel, who has only been motorcross racing for 15 months, says he was inspired to get into the sport after seeing hisDad race.
"Dad rides a lot and sometimes races too, he taught me how to ride so that I could race."
The Ngaere School student says while he often feels nervous at the start of races, "I do a lot of practise at home with Dad so I know that I can do it".
Katriel races a 65cc bike and is a part of the Taranaki Motorcycle Club and takes part in various events such as the Summer Series at Barret Road.
"There is also a series coming up in Taupo that I am going to ride in, it is fun getting to travel around to be in different competitions."
Katriel says it is not just the thrill of competition that sees him enjoying motorcross.
"I meet so many different people when I am part of different races, I have made lots of friends and I look forward to seeing them when we go to different races".
Katriel's skill has been recognised by others and he has gained various sponsors that help him cover the cost of racing. Action Moto in Hawera is one Katriel's sponsors and owner Daryl Hurley has become a mentor to Katriel. "He helps me train and teaches me tips on how to race better."
Katriel has also received support from Carac Couplings Eltham, 164 on High Hair Design and Moto Muck.
