"While playing for morning grade in Stratford I started off in the backs and while playing for Central Rugby Club in high school I was a loose forward."
Hamish says throughout high school he had a range of outstanding coaches who helped him develop his skills.
"I should acknowledge Clinton Hancock, John Espin, George Marchant for the time they put into me as a player. Also my dad, Jeff Walker, who is not only been my biggest supporter but also a great coach and rugby co-ordinator at Stratford High School". Hamish adds that playing for the university he has also given him the opportunity to work with great coaches.
The tournament that Hamish is playing in is being held at Oxford University, England and is a part of the lead up to the Rugby World Cup in September.
The New Zealand Universities Under 23 team was selected from players from universities throughout the country.
"Because the players come from all over the country, we won't have the chance to have any sort of training session before we leave New Zealand."
The team will leave for the competition, also known as the Oxford University World Cup Legacy Tournament, in September and will be up against teams from all over the world.
While Hamish says he is excited to have been selected for the team it was also a big surprise.
"It wasn't something I was planning on and it certainly isn't something the student loan can cover."
The University of Otago have offered a grant towards the cost of the trip however it will still cost Hamish some hard earned savings so he is eager to hear from any local sponsors willing to help with his expenses.
Hamish says he is looking forward to the experience, and playing on the international stage.
"As a team hopefully we can bring home the title, followed by the All Blacks bringing home the world cup."
