The Bridge and High Street corner in Eltham has been a watering hole for thirsty passers-by for more than
a century, but since end of last year its lean has changed from alcoholic beverages to also include family friendly options.
The Touchpoint Licensed Restaurant and Milkbar is a family place.
Situated in the old Central Tavern, it has given the old historic building new life.
``We are a Charitable Trust, set up under Eltham Events Centre. The aim of the trust is to promote and provide family activities and support for the people of Eltham,'' says Olwyn and Kevin Duthie, two of five trustees.
``All profit goes back into the community and will be used to host various motivational and educational functions.''
The trust, set up in 2007, has pinpointed this move as the best option to support the Eltham community, says Olwyn.
The Duthies have been long-standing participants in the community. Kevin grew up on a Mangatoki farm, where they now milk a 250-herd on 94 hectares. Both have served on various local committees and groups, having just
recently retired from scouting and guiding. Olwyn admits to being a professional volunteer, saying it is just who they are.
Having been involved with the Eltham Youth Group for the last 24 years, Olwyn says there is a real need for upskilling and further education, and with transport to Hawera, Stratford or New Plymouth, where most programmes are run, being a problem, she has seen a lot ``just drop out of life''.
``We thought it something the community needs - a safe place where families can go and just enjoy themselves.''
There is a playground for the younger children, so mum and dad can relax while dining out, and they
are about to install computers, wireless internet access and an Xbox for those wanting a game.
Teenagers can come in and have a milkshake, smoothie and chips while socialising with their friends. While those over 18 years can socialise over a glass or wine or other beverages, specialised teas and coffees, and well priced meals.
They will shortly be organising family events, movies and guest speakers, and the venue is also available for private functions.
``We have volunteers working to gain work experience. Already one of our volunteers has got a full time
job through his experience working with us.
The restaurant is open Friday and Saturday from 5pm. Phone (06) 764 8020 or 027 727 3285 to book.
