The Stratford Press team was thrilled to be invited to the opening night of Mexico New Plymouth. Just under 200 people went along last Wednesday night to try out the food, the drinks and the atmosphere at the Mexican-themed restaurant which has opened in the former Andre's L'Escargot premises on Brougham Street.

Mexico is the sixth branch to open, with others in Auckland and Hamilton.

The menu gives diners a chance to try the fresh and vibrant food that Mexico is famous for, and we loved the dishes we sampled on Wednesday night. From a light and fresh ceviche, to their special fried chicken, every dish packed a flavourful punch.

Owner Nick McCaw is thrilled to be opening in New Plymouth, "it's a really fun place with a community vibe", he says.

"We view Taranaki as a key growth area that is fast emerging as a cultural hub. We believe that the creative and artistic emphasis that New Plymouth has will work in synergy with what we like to offer at Mexico, not to mention New Plymouth being voted best small city in the world."

The restaurant has employed about 30 staff, all of whom were on hand to get the party started on Wednesday night. Staff and guests had their faces painted by The Magic Brush artists who used a "Day of the Dead" theme in keeping with the Mexican atmosphere.

The steady queue of partygoers at The Magic Brush table was a reflection of their skills.

Mexico is open from noon till late, seven days a week. Until June 1, the restaurant is operating on a first-come, first-served basis, with bookings taken from the start of June for groups of 10 or more. Keep up with the latest events at www.facebook.com/MexicoNewPlymouth
