No resource consent application for a new supermarket in Stratford has been received by the council to date, Stratford district mayor Neil Volzke says in response to recent speculation on the possibility initially reported in the Stratford Press.
Mr Volzke said in media statement that over the last few weeksduring the election campaign, he has been asked on numerous occasions if Stratford was getting a new supermarket or was it just rumour.
"In response, I offer the following comment: The New Zealand Herald ran a story recently that confirmed Stratford is currently being considered as a location for the expanding chain of Countdown supermarkets.
"However, at this point in time, council has not received any resource consent application for a new supermarket in Stratford.
"The Herald report follows a Stratford Press report published earlier this year, after which it became common knowledge that there had been some investigation work done by interested parties.
