A rather unusual version of the song Who Let the Dogs Out was performed at Stratford Primary School last week, with American Bulldogs Peaches and Mr Beefy enthusiastically barking the lead lyrics.
Peaches and Mr Beefy travel to schools with their owner, Kelly Jordan, to teach youngsters about dog safety. Their visit to Stratford Primary was funded by Stratford District Council as part of the council education programme.
Kieran Best, the compliance officer for Stratford District Council, says he has known Kelly for many years, as she worked as an animal control officer in Whanganui before setting up her own business. "I know she has a great way of talking to children, and the fact she brings her own dogs with her makes the learning that bit more relevant to the audience."
Kieran says he arranges for Kelly to talk to one school each year and is always happy to hear from schools in the district who would like to be part of the programme. "There's no doubt that Kelly really gets the children's attention and they learn a lot about being safe and staying safe around dogs. It's a fun presentation that has a serious message for the children."
