Keisha shares sports insights

Ex Elthamite Keisha Grant's professional sporting career was the hot topic at the Great Eltham Cheese Scone night on Friday.

The celebrity guest speaker talked about her experiences playing professional netball as well as representing New Zealand in athletics and touch rugby.

"Growing up I was told that I should stick with only one sport and train hard but I enjoyed giving everything a go and wasn't willing to sacrifice one sport for another."

Keisha says her family always been very supportive of her taking any opportunity that came with the various sports.

Dad is a police officer so I think he thought if I was busy I wouldn't have time to get into mischief.

Keisha first represented New Zealand at age 13 for track and field, has since been a part of three world cup tournaments for touch rugby and more recently played in the Oceania Championships for women's rugby sevens.

I really enjoy playing rugby sevens and would love to make it to the Olympic games one day.

The current Mainland Tactix netball player says it has always been a challenge for her to balance her involvement in sport, education and her social life. "Sadly I have missed a lot of family time as I travel a lot for sport but it makes it special when I do get a chance to visit."

Kesiha provided some encouraging words to the students involved in the Junior Master Scone event before teaming up with her Mum to participate in the Senior Master Scone cook off.

"While cheese scones are not a staple part of my training diet, I couldn't miss out on being a part of the cook off."

Keisha says she was honoured to be invited as guest speaker for the night, "considering the calibre of previous speakers I was humbled to be invited, it is always a bonus getting to visit my home town again".
