Over 300 people filled the Percy Thomson Gallery last Thursday for the opening of the Taranaki Arts Trail Artists' Exhibition.
As guests enjoyed the sounds of popular band Gumboot Tango, they were able to see some fantastic works of art by local artists. Attracting just as much attention as the larger works of art on the walls, were the entries in the Taonga Iti/Small Treasures matchbox challenge. This challenge, which was open to all, asked entrants to produce an individual miniature art work from an empty matchbox and the results were inspiring in their attention to detail and imagination.

Each matchbox was for sale, with all funds going towards future Taranaki Arts Trails. With prices from just $10, matchboxes started selling quickly, although there are still plenty to choose from the selection now on display at the gallery.
Mayor Neil Volzke was one of the contributors to the challenge, producing a thought provoking and topical piece entitled "Heritage". John Key also submitted a match box as did New Plymouth Mayor Andrew Judd.
