THE INGLEWOOD Rotary Club was recently given accolades by the outgoing District Governor for their continued excellence and dedication to the organisation.
Rotary District 9940 stretches from New Plymouth across to Taihape, through to Pahiatua and down to and including, Wellington.
It incorporates 65 Rotary Clubs and each year at the annual
changeover of district officers, the outgoing District Governor awards trophies and certificates of achievement to those clubs that have performed with distinction,
This year, the Inglewood Rotary Club gained distinction in four separate areas.
They attained second place overall for increase in membership by an established club, were nominated for best attendance at district training and weekly club meetings and tied for second place overall for best club bulletin
The club also took home a major prize, winning the Genesis Innovative Project Award for erecting the electronic town message board, a Rotary centennial project.
The extent of club and community involvement and the presentation made to the judges by the club about the project were deciding factors in their victory.
The message board was a huge undertaking and was possible because of the support from the Taranaki Electricity Trust and several Inglewood businesses.
The time is set by the accuracy of the atomic clock and the temperature is read in the shade out of the wind by an electronic sensor thermometer and is the display is accurate to within half a degree. The message board was made in South Africa and imported by an Auckland company to the club's specifications.
Club president, Ian Wickham, attended the changeover function in Wellington two weeks ago to receive the awards on behalf of the club.
Ian was also further surprised to be the recipient on behalf of the club, of a Presidential Citation, an award presented by the president of Rotary International from Chicago, Illinois.
These citations are awarded to those clubs nominated by the District Governor to recognise a high level of success across a whole range of criteria.
The club has won a Presidential Citation for each of the last two years and was last awarded one in the 2003-2004 Rotary year.
