Stratford's inaugural ANZ Daffodil Day duck race was won by only the tip of a bill on Friday afternoon after the leading duck was overtaken at the last minute.
Winner on the day was duck number 111, sponsored by Russell Vickers, one of only 31 entrants to cross the finishline.
While conditions on the river were reasonably calm, the icy temperatures saw a group of race participants huddled in the weeds before the home stretch.
ANZ branch manager Brendon Gernhoefer says the first official duck race was a great success with an overwhelming amount of community support. "We sold out all 75 ducks before the race, the community really got behind the fundraising initiative."
Brendon says all proceeds raised will be donated to the Cancer Society. "Everyone has been touched by cancer one way or another which I think is why people are so willing to donate."
Brendon extends his gratitude to everyone who supported the duck race and says it is a very real possibility the race will be back again. He adds a special thank you goes to Bailee Drummond (15) who volunteered to take on the icy Patea river to ensure all the ducks came back to shore.
