HENRY Weston has plenty to smile about he recently won the Maori OAteroa section at the annual Taranaki Arts Award.
His piece entitled 'Te Patu, Te Awa, Te Maunga' was a beautiful carved rock that took Henry three weeks to create.
Henry's creation was referred to as Picasso meets Aotearoa.
For his efforts he received $1000, which he said would help him buy new carving tools as well as saving a good amount in the bank.
Henry was one of four students chosen from Te Kura O Ngaruahinerangi in Mangatoki to enter the awards.
Fellow students Arohaleigh Ngatai-Weston (created a woven flax backpack 'Te Peke'), Manuel Tulisi (rock carving of a hook 'Matau') and Joshua Mose-Tuiluma also all did extremely well.
The students would like to thank their tutors Whare Kihi and Matua Panni for helping and teaching them new skills.
The art awards were held in Opunake, with many items now on display at the Percy Thomson gallery in Stratford.
