A luncheon was held in the Maata Hall on April 29, to mark the Golden Jubilee of the Maata Womens Institute.
Val Kerr, president, gave a brief history of the institute, and welcomed members, along with South Taranaki federation president, Phyllis Malcolm, and vice president, Margaret Bishop.
The first minutes
were read by Gill Campbell, secretary, and Joyce Lawrence read the first annual report. Grace was said by Heather Payne.
Thirty-five people attended, coming from as far afield as Hamilton and Te Awamutu, including Gwen Dudley, Helen Dudley, and Kathryn Gordon representing three generations, Pam and Angela Wright, and Ngaire Sangster and Val Campbell, representing two generations.
The cake, which was made by Gill Campbell and iced by her daughter, Sarah Theodore, was cut by Jeanette Tretheway, Elveena McQueen, and Janice Hawkes, being three foundation members. The candles were fanned out by Ngaire Sangster, who also joined in 1964.
