Garden shed for E-Kai

Volunteers and community workers of Eltham's E-Kai Community Garden can now take shelter from the rain in a newly donated garden shed.

Established in 2013 by Janice and Howard Hughes, the community garden provides fresh and frozen produce packages for the Eltham Food Bank.

Howard says the garden needed a shelter for workers to enjoy smoko in or to hide from the winter rain.

Like all other aspects of the garden, the shed has been kindly provided by local sponsors. Howard says he approached Kevin Lozell at Mangamingi Timber & Supplies for materials and Vicky Andreoli at Feats for design and construction by the students.

"Everyone was so willing to help, we were overwhelmed with support," says Howard.

Taranaki Steelformers provided the steel for the roof and Mangamingi Transport & Contracting helped complete the construction.

"We could not be more grateful to all of our sponsors who have helped us develop the garden," says Howard.

"It is wonderful to see all the work going on at the community garden, this is a great model for other communities to adopt when establishing their community gardens," says South Taranaki District councillor, Alex Ballantyne.

To date, more then 6000 volunteer hours have been clocked up with the community garden providing over 150 fresh and over 200 frozen vegetable packs for the food bank.
