For the past 18 months recycling paper has been a focus at Avon Kindergarten as part of their sustainability initiatives, receiving native plants in return through the initiative 'Paper 4 Trees'.
The children have been involved in planting these at the Kindergarten with each tree having a special karakia said as it is planted. We would like to thank "Paper for Trees", sponsored by Shell Todd Oil Services Ltd, and Te Kahuri Nurseries that supplied the native trees. The trees are a great addition to enhance the kindergarten's bi-cultural commitment to take care of Papatuanuku " "Mother Earth". The next project that is underway is establishing edible gardens, supported by a grant from Fonterra "Grassroots" and TSB Community Trust. The gardens will provide produce for the regular soup making. The children prepare the vegetables for the soup which they relish, some coming back for second and third helpings! The soup making is part of the healthy eating focus at Avon Kindergarten.
