Pupils in Room 2, St Joseph's Stratford are keeping a close eye on their remaining pet budgie.
When class started this morning for the pupils of Room 2 at St Joseph's School in Stratford, there were two baby budgies sitting in a cage on a desk.
But when they came back in after playtime, there was only one budgie left.
While the cage door was shut, thelikely explanation is that some little fingers may have opened the door in a moment of curiousity, and one budgie made a dash for the wild world outside, says room 2 teacher, Miriam Van der Lee.
"The plan was to name them today," she says, explaining the two budgies had been given to the school by the grandfather of a pupil.
"Room 1 have several pets in the class, so they kindly gave the pair of budgies to our classroom so we could share the enjoyment of having classroom pets."
Kakariki - this green budgie pictured here, is missing his friend, a blue budgie which flew away on Wednesday.
The budgies, one green and one yellow, had settled in to their new environment and had just begun to sing, to the delight of the class of five-year-olds.
"I think the one left behind is sad as he is missing his friend, so he doesn't sing now," says Noah Bretherton, (5) who like his classmates, is worried about how the little blue budgie will survive in the cold outside.
Miriam says the class are hoping someone may see their missing budgie and be able to return it to his rightful place, surrounded by his friends in Room 2.
While the blue budgie is yet to be named, his green feathered friend has been named Kakariki by the pupils in Room 2, who hope they will still get a chance to give the blue one a name as well.
"If you see our budgie, please call the school and tell our teacher, she will know what to do," says Noah, who adds "I want him to come back and sing in our classroom again".
