Duck challenge set to get racing

The Stratford ANZ Bank's inaugural Daffodil Day Duck Race is set to go swimmingly says organiser Dorothy Oakes.

While racing 75 yellow plastic ducks down the Patea River may seem like a stretch to most, Dorothy says the team ANZ have taken on the challenge like ducks to water.

"We wanted to do something more creative than a sausage sizzle or jumble sale, a duck race is new and fun twist on a raffle."

Starting at the swing bridge behind the TET Multi Sport Centre, the traditional bath toys will float down the river and cross the finish line behind the Stratford Scout Den.

It only costs $10 to sponsor a duck and the sponsor of the winning duck will take home $100 and bragging rights. Dorothy says sponsors can choose their lucky number, but as numbers are limited you need to get in quick.

While the winner does not have to be at the race to claim their prize, Dorothy says it would be great to have a crowd of spectators at the finish line.

There are four plastic duck 'characters' to choose from, which are on display at ANZ Bank. "You can come in and check them out to see which one looks to be the fastest ."

All the money raised will be donated to the Taranaki Cancer Society.

Dorothy says the duck race is going to be held on the same night as the Daffodil Day disco so that families can enjoy the race together before heading to the disco.
