Humbled at first by the responsibility of being the custodians of the Te Popo Gardens, new owners Les and Amanda Heynie decided to enter the Powerco Taranaki Garden Spectacular, against advice suggesting that they should wait a year.
Now a few weeks after the festival they say they are still completely overwhelmed by the reactions and feedback from visitors to the only privately owned woodland garden in Taranaki.
"Amanda and I took ownership of Te Popo on April 29 this year. Though we've been working up in Auckland for the past few months, we travelled home on weekends to work the land. However, if not for the hard work and dedication, the time and love and money invested in this little piece of paradise by our predecessors and the few people helping us do the hard yards, it would not have been possible for us as 'newbies' to enter the festival."
The visitors' book is overflowing with positive comments such as:
"Beautiful peaceful place - the kids loved the swing bridge."
