Residents at the Maryann Rest Home and Hospital enjoyed an afternoon of high tea, fancy hats and some good-natured betting as they watched the Melbourne Cup on television last week.
While they were an ocean away from the racing event, they still got into the spirit of the day, diggingout their finery and hats ready for the occasion. Jenny Loveridge, the community care co-ordinator at Maryann, says the atmosphere was excellent, with the residents enjoying the opportunity to dress up, have a drink or two and a shared supper.
"It was a great day, lots of fun," she says.
Resident Peter Woodhead agrees, saying he loved watching the racing, especially when the cup was won by a young female jockey. "Seeing her win ... just goes to show, women are the salt of the earth!"
Denys Aagaard was delighted to have won the sweepstake. "I didn't even know which horse I had, so it was a real surprise."
