Ceremony to open art show

Everyone's welcome at a weekend of contemporary art, community and music to celebrate the opening of the Govett-Brewster Art Gallery/Len Lye Centre.

The powhiri and official opening ceremony will start at 9am, Saturday July 25 on Queen St.

Gather on the corner of Devon Street West and Queen Street by 8.45am. This is an outdoor ceremony, so please dress for the weather.

The galleries are then open from 10am - 6pm.

Take your time to check out New Zealand's first piece of destination architecture linked to contemporary art with its exhibitions of Len Lye's and Govett-Brewster Collection work, the new cinema and some of the largest, most impressive gallery spaces in the country.

Lights, Sound, Action - an activity for the young, and young at heart, is running between 11am and 4pm at the Todd Energy Learning Centre. Come along and construct a Len Lye inspired quickie kinetic art work. Bring your sculpture to life in a shadow play. All materials provided.

Other events and activities during the day include a community weaving project, roving dance and theatre performances as well as the official opening party in the evening.
