Yachting: Thompson sails ahead

Torbay yachtsman Alistair Thompson leads the way in the national Optimist yachting championships being sailed off New Plymouth.

The Aucklander finished day three of competition in front of Garth Ellingham (Wakatere), with Scott Illingworth (Torbay) lying third ahead of Chris Dawson (Murrays Bay) and Paul Baker (Torbay).

Due to light wind, only two races were sailed yesterday. Organisers have brought forward the start time of the final day today.

After seven races the sailors drop their worst performance and, after nine races, their worst two.
