Auckland sailors are dominating the national starling championships at Port Chalmers on Otago Harbour.
Brad Thom, from the Kohimarama Yacht Club, by far the most consistent of the favourites, is cementing himself as the top prospect to take home the winner's trophy.
With a win in the fourth race yesterday, coupled with
a third and a fifth in the day's other races, to add to a strong performance on the first day, Thom is showing outstanding ability in a variety of conditions.
In tricky conditions, race four, which took three starts to get under way, provided all the excitement.
Thom, leading the Kohimarama Yacht Club contingent of 25 yachts, had his yacht Hybrid safely placed at the favoured end of the start line, heading the pack around the first mark of the course.
With clear air, Thom extended his lead in the race and his overall lead in the contest.
Second was Luke Gower from Auckland's North Shore, with Thom's club-mate Geoffrey Woolley third, in one of the new fibreglass starlings.
