Yachting: Slow progress as Club Med reaches Cook Strait

Club Med is slowly tacking its way across the top of the South Island as it continues its non-stop journey around the world.

The Grant Dalton skippered catamaran was reaching speeds of 16 knots at one stage, but the fickle winds have slowed progress considerably.

This afternoon winds in the area were so light the boat was almost becalmed.

The Race leader is now expected to round Cape Jackson at around 6 pm, about 800 miles ahead of second placed Innovation Explorer.

A small flotilla is waiting to greet Dalton as Club Med sails through the Strait.
