New Zealand dinghy sailor Blair McLay claimed bronze at the open Laser Radial world championships in Brazil today, after being pipped by one point for runner-up.
McLay, 18, improved his performances throughout the event, and a win in the final race off Fortaleza left him just shy of the silver medal that went to American Brad Funk.
Brazilian Eduardo Couto took the title with a 15-point gap over the rest of the 90-strong field.
Two other New Zealanders, Andrew Mowlem and Max Andrews, finished 14th and 22nd respectively.
In the Olympic class women's fleet, Jo Aleh headed the New Zealand effort by coming 21st overall, while Sara Winther was one place further back and Cushla Hume-Merry 61st.
American Paige Railey took gold in the regatta, which had 76 entries.
McLay, Andrews and Hume-Merry now have a two-day rest before the start of the youth Laser Radial world championship.
