Grant Dalton's Amer Sport One still leads the round-the-world race - despite being forced to alter their route after blowing out a spinnaker.
Dalton's crew had to take a slightly more southerly course when the code 3 reaching spinnaker blew out after a change from the smaller code 5.
Amer Sports One's
Roger Nilson said launching the full-size kite, a code 4, pushed them down a southerly course.
"It was more south then we had planned," he said. "But soon we realised that the gap in our sail inventory gave us a push to make a move on illbruck.
"Off we went in high speeds, often 20 knots plus and realised that our latitude gap to illbruck would increase."
The forced move seems to have worked in their favour as Amer Sport One lead illbruck by 40 miles, with News Corp third.
The fleet has split into three, with Tyco and ASSA ABLOY in the middle ahead of the back trio of djuice, SEB and Amer Sports Too.
The leading yachts are due to reach Cape Town to complete the first of the nine legs on Thursday night (NZT).
