SYDNEY - New Zealand maxi Alfa Romeo has claimed an edge over Sydney to Hobart rival Wild Oats XI in the SOLAS Big Boat Challenge on Sydney Harbour.
A twisted spinnaker two-thirds of the way through the challenge ruined Wild Oats XI's chances. Alfa Romeo took full advantage to claim
a comfortable victory. Wild Oats X came in third to lead home the rest of the 19-boat field, while Quest claimed the handicap title.
The SOLAS Big Boat Challenge is the only time Wild Oats XI and Alfa Romeo will race against each other before the start of the Sydney to Hobart on Boxing Day.
The 2009 Rolex Trophy Rating Series, the final events before the Sydney to Hobart, begins tomorrow. The six-race series concludes on Sunday.
