Winners and losers from the sporting weekend

Wynne Gray and Chris Rattue list the winners and losers from the sporting weekend.

Winners:

Northern Hemisphere rugby:
Okay...Wales lost, surprise surprise. But victories to Ireland and England against South Africa and Australia represent a decent haul for rugby's often-maligned northern brothers. - CR

Ireland rugby:
Too good to be sure. Ireland, with 14 men for the last hour, hung in and hung in and beat the Boks who are battling more issues than new coach Alisstair Coetzee needs. - WG

The Warriors:
They have been in all sorts of troughs this year and there was still some doubt whether they would beat the lowly Knights away. They won and did it with some style. - WG

Took advantage of the worst left-side defence you will ever see in the NRL to annihilate the hapless Newcastle Knights, with right wing David Fusitua nabbing four tries. - CR

Muhammad Ali's legacy:
Even in death the Greatest won as the world found some unison at his funeral. It was another knockout performance from beyond the grave. - WG

Don't want to mention her name, for fear of the jinx. - CR

Losers:

Anthony Hudson
The All Whites coach has his nauseating whining detracted from the efforts of his players winning the Oceania Nations Cup. - WG

Euro 2016
As fan violence escalated in Marseilles and UEFA waned England and Russia they would be thrown out of the tournament if there were repeats. -WG

Football:
A much anticipated European Championship is in danger of being wrecked by violence...why can't the world's biggest sport shake this curse? - CR

The Sea Eagles
Manly led 24-4 against Penrith in the second half and walked off to jeers on their home Brookvale Oval after losing 31-24 as coach Trent Barrett blew his scone. -WG

Cleveland:
Oh no. Not again. The city already has an unwanted reputation as a professional sports championship free zone...LeBron James' Cavaliers fell further behind the Golden State Warriors in the NBA finals. - CR
