IF you don't laugh, you'll cry.

Unfortunately, for this American teenager, the entire internet is also laughing - at her.

A brief video clip of a standard year eight athletics meeting last year in Green Bay, Wisconsin, has catapulted student Makenna Kroge from the girl a few friends were laughing about to the girl the world is laughing at.

The video, which shows Kroge, 14, brutally face-planting twice in the opening 10m of a running race, was captured by another student from a nearby school, 15-year-old Lexi Cornelius.

The clip was only posted on social media on Sunday after Cornelius and Kroge randomly bumped into each other and started talking about the epic fail recently.

Naturally, Kroge encouraged Cornelius to share the video on Twitter.

Then it exploded.

The video has more than 21,000 re-tweets and more than 22,000 likes.

On the same day the video was posted, Cornelius and Kroge had to turn their Twitter notifications off because they were getting too many. Their phones were melting.

"I honestly thought it would get one re-tweet and 10 favourites," Cornelius told New York Magazine.

Kroge said: "It was getting too crazy. I had a lot of notifications coming in."

"I don't really know, I was super nervous," Kroge explained of her epic fail.

"A bunch of girls that didn't like me were there so I was going to impress them.

"After I fell, at the end, when I am looking back, you can hear my dad and he's screaming at me to run."

Kroge's mum is the co-star of the video.

Her classic phrase, asking her daughter if she is OK after twice falling over, became just as popular on social media as the video.

The phrase, "Are you OK, honey?" quickly started trending on Twitter in the United States and became just as popular as the 15 minutes of fame enjoyed by the "Damn Daniel" phrase.
