Aussie Jason Day was the leader after two days of the Travellers Championship but the golfing world was left stunned by a crazy moment.

Two-time Masters winner Bubba Watson was one shot behind Day after 36 holes despite his equipment letting him down.

It was the second tee shot of the day when Watson, wielding a bright pink driver, crushed a 295-yard drive.

The drive was especially impressive as Watson checked his swing midway as the head of his club flying off just as fast as the ball.

"The head of his driver came off," one of the commentators said. "And the ball, somehow miraculously, is in the middle of the fairway."

"Well that was crazy," another announcer said.

"That was amazing that he had that kind of... I've never seen that before."

The shaft of the club had snapped in the shot as well, with more vision of his caddie Ted Scott trying to get the broken part of the shaft out of the club head.

After the round, in which Watson shot 66, the American was in a good mood when asked about the drama.

"It was a perfect tee shot right down the middle. Chipped it in there and made the putt for birdie," Watson said wryly. "I don't know. Ho-hum.

"Nobody in my group knew where the ball was. Once you hit, you're just focused on where the driver head goes.

"Again, luckily... But if I was going to hit anybody, I was hoping it would be Brooks (Koepka)," he laughed. "But I missed him though. I'm not that good of an aimer."

But Watson was able to use a back up after the incident and said "it wasn't too big of a deal".

It comes as Day moved into first place in the tournament as the former world number one, who last won three years ago at Quail Hollow, fired eight birdies in a bogey-free round to stand on 131 after 36 holes at TPC River Highlands in Cromwell, Connecticut.

"Body is OK. Just stiff," Day said. "Any time going left was a little bit sore. I haven't had time to really rest it since I kind of put it out."

Day, the 2015 PGA Championship winner, missed three consecutive cuts before sharing 44th at the PGA Championship then withdrew from the Memorial with a back injury earlier this month.

"Sometimes when you do have sort of an injury or stiffness, even if you're sick, sometimes you can come out and play some good golf," Day said.

"I was fortunate enough to not really get in my own way today. Hit a lot of good quality drives and my tee to green was pretty solid, I thought. Then holed a lot of crucial putts out there so that's what kept everything rolling."
