UFC: Conor McGregor's shock backstage spat with champ

A random meeting between Conor McGregor and Tyron Woodley at the UFC 205 weigh-ins turned volatile a couple of hours later after the fighters started exchanging messages on Twitter.

The original altercation seemed like much ado about nothing after McGregor hit the scale and stepped over to a table set up by the UFC staff where fighters can begin to refuel with food and water provided for them.

McGregor got stuck waiting after the electricity went out in the room and he had to step back onto the scale for photos. As he stood eating a piece of watermelon, welterweight champion Tyron Woodley emerged from the backstage area to grab something from the table when he ran into McGregor.

McGregor stared the welterweight champion down as he passed and the two fighters briefly exchanged greetings, but it was clear the Irishman was in no mood for pleasantries.

Another moment was also captured here, with McGregor believed to be angry that Woodley was filming his fracas with Eddie Alvarez at the UFC 205 press conference:

McGregor is heard calling Woodley a "bitch" and "like a woman" in the exchange.

Woodley decided to later respond on Twitter after the encounter was documented on social media.

"Some of us are really about that that life! The quiet ones are the ones really from the slums. Don't make me go back," Woodley wrote.

It didn't take long for McGregor to hear about Woodley's statement and he fired back with one of his own moments later.

That prompted Woodley to take a shot back at McGregor as well, which of course only forced the featherweight champion to respond again.

Woodley later told MMA Fighting's Ariel Helwani that all he had done to spark the episode was walk around McGregor, seeking out a bottle of water, and say: "What's up?"

"You can't call me a bitch. That's something that's like a slap in the face or a spit in the face where I'm from, so you don't just call a dude a bitch," Woodley said.

"That's something you just don't cross the line on with me."

On Thursday at the pre-fight press conference, McGregor said that he was coming for "all the belts" on the table at UFC 205 and that included Woodley's welterweight belt.

McGregor has flirted with the idea of fighting for the 170-pound title previously, but following two bouts at welterweight with Nate Diaz, it appeared he was happy to move back down to 155 pounds for the fight with Eddie Alvarez on Saturday night.

Now considering this latest dust up, maybe McGregor really will pursue a third title assuming Woodley can get past Stephen "Wonderboy" Thompson at UFC 205.
