The seemingly unbeatable Australian men's 4x100m freestyle relay team not only failed to win gold at the London Olympics, but they also left the pool without a medal of any colour. Led by James Magnussen, the fastest man in water, the Australians were unbackable favourites to win the gold and it seemed the only unanswered question would be who would take out silver and bronze. But when the wall was touched at the end of eight laps by Australia's final swimmer, James Roberts, his nation had no medal and his team's mettle was being questioned.
Socceroos
In Australia's first game of the 2010 World Cup in South Africa against Germany, the Socceroos were hoping to show the world that the sleeping giant was well and truly awake. By the time the Germans' fourth goal had gone in with 20 minutes to play, the old giant had rolled over again.
Tri Nations
In 2005 the Wallabies were thrashed 24-0 by the Kiwis in the Tri Nations final. New dad Stacey Jones did an amazing global journey to star in this match, which can now be seen as heralding a new era in international league. It ended three decades of Australian tournament victories. It also forced the controversial resignation of Aussie coach Wayne Bennett, freeing him up - as it turned out - to mastermind the Kiwis' shock World Cup victory three years later.
One Australia
Disaster struck Australia's boat halfway through the 1995 America's Cup race against Team New Zealand. Probably due to structural deficiencies that were ignored in order to make the yacht faster, the framework simply couldn't handle the force of the Pacific's waves. It broke in half and was immediately sucked to the bottom of the ocean, 150m below.
