BASTAD INTERNATIONAL
(Bastad, Sweden)

Russian top seed Nikolay Davydenko went through to the quarterfinals with a 6-0 3-6 6-1 win over compatriot Yuri Schukin yesterday.

The world number five needed one hour and 44 minutes to oust qualifier Schukin and next faces Chilean Nicolas Massu, who beat Argentina's Jose Acasuso 6-4 6-2.

The players each had eight break point opportunities during the match but Davydenko won five compared to only one for Schukin.

Jarkko Nieminen was the first man through to the last eight by beating Czech Lukas Dlouhy 6-7 6-0 6-3.

The in-form Finn lost the first-set tiebreak 7-2 but then found his groove, grabbing nine consecutive games to level the match and take 3-0 lead in the decider.

Both players then held serve and Nieminen finished it off on his first match point on a ball Dlouhy hit in the net.

Nieminen, who made the Wimbledon quarter-finals last week to reach a career-high ranking of 13th, faces eighth-seeded Spaniard Juan Carlos Ferrero next.

Ferrero, the 2003 French Open champion and former world No 1 easily disposed of Austrian Oliver Marach 6-2 6-3.

First round: A. Waske (Germany) bt J. Bjorkman (Sweden) 6-4 4-6 6-3.

Second round: 1-N. Davydenko (Russia) bt Y. Schukin (Russia) 6-0 3-6 6-1, 8-J. C. Ferrero (Spain) bt O. Marach (Austria) 6-2 6-3, N. Massu (Chile) bt J. Acasuso (Argentina) 6-4 6-2, 4-J. Nieminen (Finland) bt L. Dlouhy (Czech Republic) 6-7 6-0 6-3.
