Game, set and love match?

American tennis star Lauren Davis not only won the ASB Classic during her time in New Zealand - she also won the heart of a Kiwi camera operator.

The 23-year-old American hit the headlines this month for her giant-killing victory of number eight seed Ana Konjuh - a win that banked the diminutive world number 45 her first WTA title and a cheque for almost $60,000.

But Davis, who described the ASB Classic as "my favourite tournament" was also busy racking up an ace off the court.

The Herald on Sunday can reveal Davis took a shine to a young camera operator who was contracted to shoot the action by a PR company. The pair hooked up and ended up on a date in the Auckland CBD.

When contacted by the Herald on Sunday, the man confirmed he and Davis went out together, but the bashful media man didn't want to be identified.

He said there had been a chance Davis, who has career earnings of $2 million, might "swing back through New Zealand" on her return from the Australian Open.

But after the high of Auckland, Davis crashed out in the opening round of the women's singles in Melbourne and will now return to her usual schedule.

"She's not swinging back through now. It was possible but, no, it's not happening now," the man said.

"We'll probably catch up again but it could just be as friends, " he said.
