Four wildcards were offered to New Zealanders in the 32-strong qualifying draw, which will find the last four players for the tournament proper starting next Monday.
"I had to look at a number of things before handing out that last wildcard," said classic director Richard Palmer yesterday.
"In the end I went with her [Hollands] as the 18s champion and given her good effort in the New Zealand Residential Championships."
Hollands lost in the second round to eventual runner-up Tracey O'Connor in a tough three-set battle.
Eighteen-year-old Hollands said she thought she might have blown her chance of a wildcard.
"When I was told I was quite surprised. I felt bad for Tanja as I'm staying with her and she is one of my best friends."
There may still be some good news for the pair, as Palmer will consider them when he hands out a wildcard for doubles qualifying.
The chance to trade shots with some of the world's best is a huge boost for Hollands, who next month takes up a tennis scholarship at the University of Arizona.
