Tennis updates: Teenager makes ASB Classic final

9.45pm: Croatian teenager Ana Konjuh has progressed to the ASB Classic final, with a 6-3 4-6 6-3 over German Julia Goerges.

The match - which stretched beyond two hours - never reached any great heights, as both players were inconsistent from the baseline and full of unforced errors.

But the powerful Konjuh always looked more likely, as Goerges struggled to find the brilliance she demonstrated in her quarter final win over Wozniacki on Thursday.

The 2016 finalist did well to take the second set - after looking out of sorts in the first - but couldn't get any momentum in the final set. Goerges was broken twice, and couldn't take advantage of five break opportunities on the Konjuh serve.​

Konjuh will face world No61 Lauren Davis in Saturday's final. The two have met once before, coincedentially in Auckland in 2014, with the American Davis wining in three sets.

7.15pm: The ASB Classic has found its first finalist after American Lauren Davis advanced from a three-set battle against Jelena Ostapenko.

Ostapenko was the tournament's highest remaining seed but the Latvian succumbed to a viral illness and was forced to retire while trailing 4-6 6-4 4-1 this afternoon.

As the match crept near the two-hour mark, the seventh-seeded Ostapenko began to noticeably tire as Davis took command of the third set, with her eventual retirement seeing the American advance to Saturday's showpiece.

Davis will meet the winner of the semifinal between German Julia Goerges and Croatian eighth seed Ana Konjuh, a match just beginning on centre court at Stanley St.

4.40pm: Dutchwoman Demi Schuurs and Czech Renata Voracova have kept alive their hopes of winning a third WTA Tour doubles title by progressing into the ASB Classic final.

The pair, regular partners on the circuit, needed 1h 24min to overcome Canadian Gabriela Dabrowski and Chinese Zhaoxuan Yang, 7-5 6-2 at Auckland's ASB Tennis Centre.

They will take on the winners of the Kiki Bertens (Netherlands)/Johanna Larsson (Sweden) v Kirsten Flipkens (Belgium)/Jelena Ostapenko (Latvia) semi later tonight.

Ostapenko is due on court next for her singles semi-final against American Lauren Davis.

3pm: Doubles takes centre stage first on the penultimate day of action at Auckland's ASB Tennis Centre.

Dutchwoman Demi Schuurs and Czech Renata Voracova take on Canadian Gabriela Dabrowski and Chinese Zhaoxuan Yang, the fourth seeds, for a spot in tomorrow's final.

Dabrowski and Zhaoxuan combined twice last year, losing the final on grass at Nottingham in June.

Schuurs and Voracova were regular partners on the WTA Tour last year, winning at Prague and Saint Gaudens.

Later today, not before 5pm, Latvian seventh seed Jelena Ostapenko takes on American Lauren Davis in the first singles semi-final, followed by German Julia Goerges against Croatian eighth seed Ana Konjuh.

Weather should not be a factor today.
