Tennis: Daniell bows out of US Open

Kiwi doubles player Marcus Daniell has bowed out of the US tennis Open in New York in the second round.

Daniell and Brazilian partner Marcelo Demoliner have been beaten by fourth seeds Jamie Murray and Bruno Soares 7-6, 6-3 in one hour and one hour and 49 minutes.

Daniell will reflect on a golden opportunity missed to make a deep run in the tournament after having a set point in the first set and squandering an early break in the second.

Daniell and Demoliner saved a break point in the opening game of the match and then had the fourth seeds under pressure on serve in the third game but couldn't convert five break point chances.

The Kiwi and Brazilian served strongly until the ninth game when the fourth seeds had three break point chances but couldn't convert.

They then had a set point on their opponent's serve at 6-5 but failed to take the chance and went on to lose the tie breaker 7-4 with the first set taking 62 minutes.

Murray and Soares got off to a flying start to the second set by holding to love in the first game but after squandering break point chances in the next game were broken for the first time.

However Daniell and Demoliner couldn't consolidate the break at 2-1 and were broken in the very next game as the fourth seeds took control.

Soares and Murray grabbed the vital break in the eighth game and went on to close out the match and a place in the third round.

Daniell and Demoliner had lost in the third round to the British/Brazilian pair at last year's US Open.

The defeat ends the run of the Kiwi men in the doubles at Flushing Meadows after Michael Venus and Artem Sitak lost in the first round.

Venus is in second round mixed doubles action later this morning playing with Taipei's Hao-Ching Chan against Poland's Alicja Rosolska and Mexican Santiago Gonzalez in the second round of the mixed doubles.
