Tennis: Australian player Nick Kyrgios delivers on coronavirus promise

Tennis phenom Nick Kyrgios has been true to his word, delivering boxes of food to those in need of help amid the coronavirus epidemic.

Countless Australians have lost their jobs because of the Covid-19 outbreak, leaving some people in Canberra without a source of income for basic necessities, such as food and rent.

On Monday, Kyrgios posted a heartfelt message to his Instagram, asking for people to get in touch if they don't have the means to look after themselves and their families.

"If anyone is not working/not getting an income and runs out of food, or times are just tough … please don't go to sleep with an empty stomach," Kyrgios wrote.

"Don't be afraid or embarrassed to send me a private message. I will be more than happy to share whatever I have.

"Even just for a box of noodles, a loaf of bread or milk. I will drop it off at your doorstep, no questions asked!"

Kyrgios evidently delivered on his promise, posting an image to his Instagram with boxes of essential foods in the boot of his car, captioning the photo: "Deliveries in progress."

Kyrgios' mother also shared an image to Instagram showing the family's "distribution centre" — piles of food filling the family dining room in Canberra.

Kyrgios is renowned for his erratic on-court behaviour, which has seen him cop plenty of criticism in the past. However, the tennis prodigy is slowly winning over the Australian public as he uses his profile to help the less fortunate.

The 24-year-old kicked off the "Rally for Relief" before the Australian Open to raise money for the bushfire relief appeal, which raised almost $5 million. He also donated $200 per ace during the summer with millions of dollars coming in throughout the year's first grand slam.

ATP and WTA tournaments have been suspended for several months because of the coronavirus outbreak and Wimbledon has cancelled for this first time since WWII.
