In Wozniacki's case, the excitement - or her ranking - hasn't necessarily been matched by her results in the four majors.
The winner of a creditable 18 titles in her six years on the WTA tour, Wozniacki is yet to make a grand slam final, a gap in her CV that attracts regular questioning.
Two days out from the first round of the Open, the comparison between Wozniacki's ranking and her record again came up for discussion - and her response didn't reveal any sign of over-confidence.
"Obviously every time you go into a tournament, you want to try to win it," she said.
"I want to try to win here. We'll see if that will happen.
"You need to play the best tennis to do that."
Wozniacki reached the semi-finals of last year's Australian Open, losing to China's Li Na after holding match point.
She also made the semis at the US Open where Serena Williams beat her in straight sets.
This year she says she is looking at the season as a whole, not just at the four grand slam championships.
"I've been No.1 for a long time already," she said.
"Now my main focus is just to win as many tournaments as possible and the ranking will be there if you play well."
In Wozniacki's favour is her familiarity with Australia and Melbourne Park where the 21-year-old has played every summer since she was 12.
