Marcelo Rios has paid a fine for attacking a taxi driver and two Carabinieri policemen hours after the Chilean tennis player was knocked out of the Italian Open last year.
Rios' lawyer, Luigi Fischetti, said today that the fine had been paid a month ago. He would not disclose the amount.
Rios had already been fined US$10,000 ($21,491) for unsportsmanlike behaviour at the players' party during the Masters Series tournament in Rome.
He allegedly became rowdy during the party and went out and attacked the taxi driver and policemen. Police said the incident happened near St Peter's Square and that the 26-year-old Rios, accompanied by his trainer and an ATP official, had been drinking.
The taxi driver called police after Rios attacked him. When two paramilitary Carabinieri intervened, the tennis player assaulted them as well, police said shortly after the incident.
