Sydney-Hobart starts in moderate northerly

Northerly winds reaching 15-20 knots are greeting yachties at the start of the annual Sydney to Hobart yacht race.

A fast time is expected, which could break the race record.

Time Lord is one of just two New Zealand flagged entries into the famous race.

Crewman Kevin Lidgard said the team has spent six months preparing for this day. He said they are all very experienced sailors and they hope to do well and most importantly reach Hobart safely.

The other New Zealand entry is Mustang Sally and the favourite for line honours is Wild Oats.

Start time today was 3pm New Zealand time.
