Surfing: Storm stalls surfing at Port Waikato

The massive storm that has churned its way across the North Island has stalled action at the final 2012 Hyundai Tour event scheduled to be completed at Port Waikato today.

The bay at Sunset Beach was filled with whitewash this morning when event officials assessed the conditions.

"It is simply not surfable out there and of course we have major safety issues,'' contest director Ben Kennings said as sand blasted the hardy few with winds of up to 100kmh.

With conditions expected to improve tomorrow with a major decrease in swell as well as favourable and lighter southerly winds and sunny skies, a decision has been made to extend the event for an extra day and complete it on Sunday.
