Super Bowl 48 between the Seattle Seahawks and Denver Broncos turned into a dour affair after the Seahawks went out to an early lead and never looked back. With little action on the TV screen people couldn't have been blamed for turning to Twitter for some entertainment.

According to Twitter more than 24.9 million Tweets about the game and halftime show were sent.

Here is how the social media site covered the Super Bowl.

First off.. which teams are playing and when is this game on? Historically Team 1 has the edge.

Does anyone know what time the "Super Bowl Live From The Red Carpet" show is on?

Even before the kickoff, Twitter went into overdrive when former New York Jets quarterback Joe Namath wore a big fur coat to take part in the ceremonial coin toss.

In case you were wondering what Joe Namath's coat looked like in its full glory ... pic.twitter.com/YqWU3ekKuZ

Namath then screwed up his simple task by tossing the coin before a team had called heads or tails. A quick handed referee stepped in to catch the coin mid-flight.

Joe Namath's first career Super Bowl interception.

Super Bowl 48 finally got underway as the Denver Broncos held the first possession of the game - a chance for quarterback and NFL MVP Peyton Manning to head down the field and add to his record touchdown passes for the season...not so fast.

The first play of the game saw the Broncos' centre snap the ball over the shoulder of Manning and into the endzone for a safety - gifting the Seahawks two points without Seattle even touching the ball.

The Broncos performance thus far summed up in one photo. pic.twitter.com/prpeboeXsc

It was 1st and 10. The Broncos snapped it out the back of the end zone for a safety. I probably would have just run a normal play.

Yes, someone did bet Seattle Safety as the first score of the game at 50/1 at @WilliamHillUS ... pic.twitter.com/qrTStzY3z1

Down 2-0 the Broncos had to punt the ball away following the safety and Seattle kicked a field goal in the next possession to go up 5-0. Another Steven Hauschka field goal put the NFC champions up 8-0 at the end of the first quarter.

It's so much more fun to watch FOX when it's someone else being blitzed & sacked! #SuperBowl

The Seahawks began the second quarter with the first touchdown of the game, a one yard run by running back Marshawn Lynch to go up 15-0.

Then the play which pretty much put an end to the game. Seahawks linebacker Malcolm Smith intercepted a Peyton Manning pass and ran 69 yards for a touchdown. That saw Super Bowl related chatter hit 244,889 tweets per minute.

Super Bowl ads: do they work?

Halftime and it was all Seahawks. The Broncos - the number one rated offense in the NFL - were still yet to score.

Bruno Mars was this year's halftime entertainment but according to Twitter statistics, more people were interested in special guests the Red Hot Chilli Peppers. During their only song Give It Away Now, there were around 215,000 tweets per minute.

Some weren't as impressed.

Broncos performance worst in Super Bowl history since Red Hot Chilli Peppers

With all the ads and songs the SuperBowl = world's most expensive variety sketch show, intercut with stormtroopers playing sarcastic rugby.

Then the biggest moment of the night. From the kickoff to start the second half Percy Harvin ran 87 yards to put Seattle up 29-0. It took them 12 seconds to score in the first half and 12 seconds to score in the second half. Harvin's touchdown run saw Twitter explode to 381,605 Super Bowl related tweets per minute.

With the Super Bowl all but over, legendary British actor Sir Patrick Stewart got in the spirit for his beloved Seahawks.

Seattle quarterback Russell Wilson threw his first touchdown of the game late in the third quarter to Jermaine Kearse as the Seahawks went out to a 36-0 lead.

Denver finally got on the board at the end of the third quarter when Manning found Demaryius Thomas for a 14-yard touchdown. Manning then threw to Wes Welker for a two-point conversion to make it 36-8.

But Seattle weren't done as Wilson connected with Doug Baldwin for his second touchdown of the game.

Final score: 43-8. Time to check those betting slips.

We have 9 tickets alive on Denver to finish with exactly 8 points at 250/1. Meanwhile, 13 tickets on Seattle to score 43 at 100/1.

Meanwhile boxer Floyd Mayweather denied reports that he bet $10m on the Broncos. Nice of him to say it after the game.

Somebody lied to you all. If I was going to bet, I would have bet on the Seattle Seahawks.... http://t.co/9GIt1IVx7e

And finally a sweet moment between Broncos' defensive end Shaun Phillips and his son.

Sorry we let you guys down. Messages like this is the I my thing that make me feel better. pic.twitter.com/e6FTuzw7LC
