New Zealand's brightest sporting talent will again be recognised as winners in the Future Stars awards.
Since 1968, the Herald has often been the first to acclaim this country's rising stars with many of the best young sportsmen and women acknowledged for their efforts as winners of a Future Stars
award or their forerunner the Herald Junior Sports Awards.
World and Olympic champions Valerie Vili, Sarah Ulmer, Beatrice Faumuina, Rob Waddell, Tom Ashley and Katherine Prumm are among those so recognised by the Herald.
They have been joined on the international stage by many other talented New Zealanders including cricketers Daniel Vettori, Martin Crowe and John Reid, hockey players Jeff and Ryan Archibald and Simon Child, golfers Frank Nobilo and Danny Lee and soccer international Brian Turner.
Again in conjunction with the Millennium Institute of Sport and Health, the Herald will recognise our future stars as they join the more than 200 talented performers who have received awards in the past.
Our winners are more likely to emerge from the older teenage bracket.
Applications are being accepted and must be received by December 31, 2009.
All applicants must be under 20 years of age at that date.
As well as full details of the performance(s) to be considered, applications must include date of birth, age, address and contact details. All applications should be verified by a parent or coach.
All applicants are expected to give permission for their entries to be considered. The judges, including Millennium chief executive Mike Stanley, Herald sports editor Chris Allen, former hockey international David Appleby, Olympic swimmer Alison Fitch and awards co-ordinator Terry Maddaford will make six awards with the winners receiving $1500 training grants, a trophy and product pack.
Applications can be posted to Future Stars, c/- Editorial Department, NZ Herald, P.O.Box 32, Auckland, faxed to (09) 3736406 or by email to futurestars@nzherald.co.nz
