Soccer: Ecuador coach shot in leg

Ecuador's national soccer coach was shot during an argument with men allegedly out to even the score with him for excluding former President Abdala Bucaram's son from a team preparing for the under-20 World Cup in July.

Hernan Gomez, a Colombian, was reported to be in a stable condition yesterday after being shot in the thigh at a restaurant in the coastal city of Guayaquil.

The attack comes one month after fellow Colombian Hugo Gallego quit as overseer of Ecuador's under-20 side after he was punched in the face by unknown assailants because he decided that young Dalo Bucaram was not fit enough to join the national team.
