East Ballarat, Carey (29) had bowled eight unsuccessful overs, but fellow opener Mark Van De Heuvel had just claimed a wicket with his previous ball, as he took the ball for his fateful ninth.
First delivery saw the batsman edge to first slip, the next provided a catch to the wicket-keeper, while the third was adjudged leg before wicket.
