Security guard becomes 12th fielder at Big Bash game

A security guard was involved in a bizarre incident in a Big Bash clash.

A security guard has ended up being a reluctant centre of attention following a bizarre incident at the MCG during Thursday night's Big Bash game between the Brisbane Heat and the Melbourne Stars.

English star Kevin Pietersen was facing leg spinner Samuel Badree as the Stars pursued Brisbane's total of 188 and swept the third ball of the innings' third over to the deep square leg boundary.

He avoided picking out any of the Heat fielders, but one man he almost hit was an over-enthusiastic security guard who made his way onto the field.

The man in yellow ran out onto the MCG turf mid-over to collect a stray inflatable beach ball that had made its way from the stands onto the ground - an unbelievable decision given the circumstances.

The former England star's sweep almost collected the security guard, who began running off before losing his hat, forcing him to track back embarrassingly before finally heading back towards his spot outside the boundary rope.

The Channel 10 commentators couldn't believe their eyes.

"Oh look out it's going to hit the security guard!" said Mark Waugh.

"I reckon he's tried to hit him there."

Mark Howard was equally as perplexed.

"What's he doing out there?

"It's like those lunatics that run onto the grand prix track."

Normally Pietersen is the man everyone's talking about when he's got a bat in hand, but for once someone managed to overshadow him, even though he had absolutely nothing to do with the on-field action.

The bizarre incident wasn't missed by those on Twitter.
