The pinnacle of the Toi Ohomai Baywide Secondary Schools competition is getting your hands on the Te Kani Shield and defending it in every game of the competition.

The Te Kani shield has been played for since 1950 and is named in honour of Paroa Te Kani, killed in action fighting for the 28th Maori Battalion.

The shield found a new home last weekend when an on-fire Te Puke High School first XV, recently promoted to the top division, beat Trident High School who held it for just two weeks.

Te Puke High School coach Jackson Ruben was pleased with his team's efforts. With a dominant pack and well-led backline, thanks to standout first five Jack Hollinshead, the Te Puke High team look the complete package this season and may be too good for the Rotorua Boys' High School third XV this weekend.

With all Te Puke High School teams at home this weekend it will be an opportunity for the community to rally around their boys.

John Paul College host Taupo-nui-a-Tia College. With a close win over neighbours Western Heights High School last weekend it will be a real test for Taupo as the John Paul College underdogs continue to surprise opponents.

Coach Steve Orr said: "what we lack in size, we make up for in spirit."

Trident High School take on Aquinas College and, after their disappointment in losing the Te Kani Shield, will be looking to redeem themselves with a better performance this weekend.

Western Heights High have another tough battle as Te Wharekura O Mauao look to turn around a horror start to the season, having been plagued with injuries and player absences due to other commitments.
