Super Rugby fans on their best behaviour say Police

There was an invasion of Highlanders fans into Hurricanes territory for the sold-out Super Rugby final match.

Emotions erupted after the final whistle with jubilation and heartbreak, and cheers reached fever pitch when the victorious Highlanders co-captain Ben Smith held the Super Rugby trophy aloft.

But Wellington based police said overall, the crowds who flocked to the cake tin in the capital last night, were well behaved.

"There was a full house at the final and the crowd were in good spirits, with only a few minor alcohol related issues and two minor arrests," police said in a statement.

After the match, the "positive mood" shifted to the streets with happy supporters of both sides out amongst the crowd."

Additional police college recruits had been called in to help local police with security control last night.

"A handful of arrests were made for minor offences by overall revellers acted reasonably, requiring minimal intervention," police said.
