Fijian-born wing Nemani Nadolo probably won't be available for the Crusaders until the end of February which means he will miss the start of the season, but he is already proving a hit at his new franchise.
The signing of the 25-year-old was a surprise announcement as the five New Zealand squads were revealed yesterday. He is a giant who stands at 1.95m and weighs in the region of 120kg. The other signings by the Blues, Chiefs, Highlanders, Hurricanes and Crusaders have been either announced or foreshadowed so the discreet addition of Nadolo yesterday created an impact in keeping with his on-field exploits.
Several Crusaders, including halfback Andy Ellis, have been busy checking Nadolo's impressive video highlights which suggest he doesn't lack for speed or handling skills.
Both Ellis and Crusaders coach Todd Blackadder hope Nadolo, playing for Japanese club NEC, could be the missing piece in a championship puzzle the franchise hasn't been able to finish since 2008.
"All of our backs are similar physically but Nemani could be our point of difference," Blackadder said. "He has X-factor, size, speed and power and he's very keen to join us."
Ellis said: "It will be exciting to see how he goes. Crocky [Wyatt Crockett] had a YouTube video of him playing the other day and you could see him nailing people. It will be great to have him in the mix."
The Australian-raised Nadolo, who has played for Exeter in England and Bourgoin in France, will travel to Christchurch after the Japanese season finishes. Assistant coach Tabai Matson, who coached in Japan, was instrumental in Nadolo's signing after talking to NEC coach Greg Cooper, the former All Blacks fullback.
Robbie Fruean's move to the Chiefs and the decision by Julian Savea to stay at the Hurricanes meant the Crusaders were on the lookout for a powerful back. Blackadder confirmed Dan Carter was likely to be available following his sabbatical which ends after the June test series against England.
Elsewhere, Benji Marshall attracted attention at the Blues' Eden Park announcement, but coach John Kirwan insisted the expectation at the franchise this season would be greater than in his first. The "honeymoon" period is over, he said.
The Chiefs have again recruited strongly in their bid for a third successive title, with Liam Messam saying the addition of former All Black Mils Muliaina will help fill the leadership void created by Craig Clarke's departure to Ireland.
Highlanders coach Jamie Joseph has had little choice but to put his faith in youth. There will be interest in how Argentine prop Matias Diaz performs.
