In a tightly contested first half, the Crusaders led 12-0 early on, only to have their lead run down as Moana Pasifika attacked well through multiple phases and made their presence felt at the breakdown as they put the Crusaders under pressure.
The second half was a different story, as the visitors settled into their work and ran rampant on the Albany turf.
Dominant in possession in the second half, the Crusaders ran in five tries after the restart to leave with a bonus point win and keep their names well and truly in the playoffs hunt.
“That was a tough battle out there, to be honest. I think you can see all the boys are feeling it,” Crusaders captain Will Jordan told Sky Sport.
“You could see in that set with about 10 minutes to go, we were going about 30 phases, going nowhere. Moana are certainly a very physical side, and a proud side as well.
“It’s good for us to get our season back on track and I think the bye comes at a good time for us to freshen up.”
The night got off to a poor start for the hosts when midfielder Julian Savea left the field in the opening minutes due to a shoulder injury. It was the 54-test All Black’s first game back after being ruled out with an injury niggle earlier in the season, but it came to an abrupt end.
That loss was compounded by a fast start for the visitors, as midfielder Braydon Ennor showed his strength to score in the corner just three minutes into the contest, despite plenty of attention from the Moana Pasifika defence.
Sevu Reece scoring on a counter-attack about 12 minutes later saw the Crusaders extend their lead, before tries through Tevita Ofa and Joel Lam – both converted by Patrick Pelligrini – put the hosts in front.
They held that lead for five minutes before a pinpoint cross-field kick from Crusaders rookie first five-eighths Cooper Grant fell into the waiting arms of winger Chay Fihaki for his first try of the night.
The Crusaders could have extended their lead on the stroke of halftime, but Moana Pasifika defended well to hold them out and see halftime just three points behind.
The second half, however, was one-way traffic.
As the Crusaders began to string phases together, holes opened up in the Moana Pasifika defence and were exploited.
All Blacks midfielder Leicester Fainga’anuku made a huge impact with ball in hand when he entered the contest and prop Fletcher Newell had a moment for the highlights reel when he punched through the line for a good run.
Second-half tries to Fainga’anuku, Kurtis MacDonald, Fihaki and a double to hooker George Bell did the damage, with the win meaning the Crusaders will end the weekend inside the top six.
