Former All Black Angus Ta’avao will return to the Highlanders for the first time since the death of his son.
Ta’avao took time away from rugby after his son Leo died last month.
“We are heartbroken to share that our beautiful boy Leo has gained his angel wings,” Ta’avaowrote in a social media post accompanying pictures of his son.
“After a brief battle in PICU [paediatric intensive care unit], Leo passed away surrounded by his loved ones.
“You have left a giant Leo sized hole in our hearts darling, we will miss you so so much. Til we meet again our baby boy.”
“Our thoughts and aroha are with them as they navigate their grief, and we stand alongside the Ta’avao whānau with love and support.”
Ta’avao returns to the front row this weekend to face the Western Force, replacing Rohan Wingham.
The former All Black helped his team beat the Crusaders in Super Rugby’s opening round this season, but the Highlanders have failed to win again in his absence.
Other adjustments to the squad for Saturday include Oliver Haig and Veveni Lasaqa starting ahead of Will Stodart and Sean Withy, while Folau Fakatava starts at halfback.
Head coach Jamie Joseph, who narrowly missed out on becoming All Blacks head coach, said his team are preparing to face an in-form Force side who beat Moana Pasifika last week.
“We saw last week what they’re capable of.
“They’ll be upbeat and enjoying their New Zealand tour, so they’ll present challenges for us, no doubt.
“We need to build on our start to the season, lift a notch or two, and convert more of the pressure we’re applying into points.”
